With an abundance of activities on offer throughout the year, there is no "bad time" to plan your vacation to Cape Town. Having a warm Mediterranean climate, summers are sunny and dry, while winters are mild with moderate rainfall.
Due to the surrounding mountain ranges, Cape Town weather can be unpredictable and can change quickly, so be sure to keep this in mind when setting out for the day.
My favorite time of the year would have to be February, March and April. During this time, the summer winds have started to subside but the days remain warm and long with plentiful sunshine. Evenings may be chilly, but a jacket is typically sufficient for an evening out.
Summers in Cape Town are warm, with mid-day temperatures around 26 °C (79 °F). Temperatures are however known to reach as high as 36 °C (97 °F), so be sure to pack your sunscreen and a good hat for your vacation. At night you can expect temperatures of about 16.0 °C (61 °F) and a light jacket or sweater would be well suited for a night out.
This is also the time of the year that a strong wind known as the South Easter blows from the False Bay side of the peninsula. Due to its consistency during the Summer months, the South Easter makes the beaches around Cape Town (especially Blouberg), the best in the world for windsurfing and kite surfing.

This is my favorite season in Cape Town. Although the days start to shorten and the evenings may seem cool, you still get 11+ hours of sunlight and the wind is noticeably less. Expect mild mid-day temperatures of 22 °C (72 °F), perfect weather for romantic picnics, long walks on the beach and pretty sunsets (Lundudno beach is famous for its sunsets).
For autumn ensure you pack:
Cape Town experiences mild winters, with mid-day temperatures around 18 °C (64 °F) dropping to around 8 °C (47 °F) at night. At this time of the year a wind from the North West prevails bringing with it much needed rain and transforming the surrounding landscape into a lush green oasis. A favorite activity of Capetonians during this time of the year is to spend the evening wining and dinning next to a roaring fire, typical of the many restaurants or pubs to be found all over Cape town.
For a winter vacation ensure you pack:
The Cape Floral Region is one of the richest areas for plants in the world. From the beginning of August to the end of September the landscape around Cape Town especially the West Coast and Tankwa Karoo national parks burst into a spectacular show of color.
Cape Town weather at this time of year lends itself well to flower viewing as temperatures of 20 °C (68 °F) and blue sunny skies are typical for a spring day.
